Durgapur is an industrial city renowned for its steel
industry. It is home to the Durgapur Steel Plant of
the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and several other
power plants, chemical and engineering units.
Durgapur is located on the banks of the Damodar River
and is a fast growing city.
While Durgapur is a predominantly industrial city
it does have tourist attractions in the surrounding
areas. One is Bhabani Pathak’s Tilla, an amazing
network of tunnels that start near the city centre
and go right up to the Damodar River. Other tourist
sites include the 800-year-old temple complex of Rahreswar
Shib Mandir and the Ichhai Ghosh’s Garh (fort).
There’s also the Durgapur Barrage- a dam and
tourist spot on the River Damodar.
There are a lot more tourist attractions a few kilometers
from the city. These include Santiniketan- the site
of Rabindranath Tagore’s Vishva Bharati University
about 60 km from the city and Vishnupur- the famous
terracotta temple town and a major arts and crafts
centre which is 70 km from Durgapur.
